How to Set Hot Rollers for Classic Volume

Section damp hair, roll away from your face on medium heat, and let them cool completely before removing for lasting lift.

  1. Prep your hair. Start with slightly damp hair—not soaking, not bone dry. Apply a heat protectant from mid-length to ends. Your hair should feel barely moist to the touch.
  2. Section strategically. Divide hair into three horizontal layers: bottom, middle, top. Each section should be no wider than the roller and no thicker than the roller's diameter. Clean parts make clean curls.
  3. Roll with tension. Start at the bottom layer, rolling hair away from your face. Keep steady tension as you wind—loose rolling means flat results. Secure each roller firmly against your scalp.
  4. Let them work. Leave rollers in for 15-20 minutes minimum. The rollers should feel completely cool to touch before removal. Hot hair holds no shape.
  5. Remove and style. Unroll gently without pulling. Run fingers through curls to soften, then set with a light mist of hairspray. Less is more.
