How to Create a Messy Bun Using Chopsticks

Twist your hair into a loose coil, secure it with one chopstick woven through horizontally, then add the second chopstick perpendicularly for stability.

  1. Prep your hair. Start with day-old hair that has some texture—freshly washed hair is too slippery. Lightly mist with texturizing spray if your hair is very fine or straight. Brush out tangles but don't aim for perfection.
  2. Gather into a ponytail. Use your hands to gather hair at the desired height, slightly off-center for that undone look. Twist the length loosely around itself to create a rope-like texture. Don't make it too tight—you want movement.
  3. Form the bun base. Wrap the twisted hair around the base of your ponytail, leaving the ends loose and messy. Hold the coil in place with one hand while reaching for your first chopstick.
  4. Insert the first chopstick. Slide the chopstick horizontally through the bun from one side to the other, weaving it through your hair and against your scalp. This creates your primary anchor point.
  5. Add the second chopstick. Insert the second chopstick perpendicular to the first, creating an X shape. This locks everything in place. Adjust the angle slightly if needed for comfort and security.
  6. Perfect the mess. Gently tug at sections of the bun to create volume and texture. Let some pieces fall naturally around your face. The goal is controlled chaos, not perfection.
