How to Do a Messy Bun That Actually Looks Good
Start with day-old hair, create loose texture with your fingers, twist into a bun leaving pieces out deliberately, and secure with bobby pins that match your hair color.
The difference between looking undone and looking like you rolled out of bed is intentionality—pull out the right pieces, not random ones.
- Prep your hair texture. Use day-old hair or add texture spray to clean hair. Run your fingers through to break up any smoothness. The goal is grip, not grease.
- Create the base ponytail. Gather hair at mid-head height with your fingers, not a brush. Leave face-framing pieces out intentionally. Secure with a clear or matching elastic.
- Form the bun loosely. Twist the ponytail lightly and wrap it around the base, leaving the ends sticking out. Don't pull tight—you want volume and movement.
- Pin strategically. Use 3-4 bobby pins that match your hair color. Pin from underneath the bun, not on top. Gently tug at the bun to create controlled messiness.
