How to Set Pin Curls Overnight

Wrap damp hair sections around your finger, pin flat against your head, and sleep with a silk scarf for defined curls by morning.

  1. Start with damp hair. Work on hair that's about 70% dry—not soaking, not bone dry. Apply a light mousse or setting lotion from mid-length to ends. Too much product will weigh down the curl and take forever to dry.
  2. Section systematically. Part hair into 1-inch squares across your entire head, starting at the nape. Smaller sections create tighter curls, larger sections give loose waves. Keep unused sections clipped away so you don't lose track.
  3. Form each pin curl. Take a section and wrap it around your index finger away from your face, then slide the curl off and lay it flat against your scalp. Secure with a bobby pin or small clip, keeping the curl as flat as possible against your head for comfortable sleeping.
  4. Protect while sleeping. Tie a silk scarf over your entire head, covering all the pins. This prevents frizz and keeps the curls from getting disturbed while you move in your sleep. A silk pillowcase helps too but the scarf is essential.
  5. Release and style. Remove pins carefully in the morning and gently separate curls with your fingers. Don't brush—it will destroy the curl pattern. Scrunch lightly with your hands and finish with a light hairspray if needed.
