How to Create Perfect Rope Braids
Rope braids are two sections of hair twisted in opposite directions, then wrapped around each other to create a sleek, twisted effect.
Rope braids look complicated but they're actually more forgiving than regular braids—the physics work for you once you understand the twist directions.
- Section and prep. Divide damp hair into two equal sections at your desired starting point. Apply a light styling cream to prevent frizz and add grip. The key is working with slightly textured hair, not freshly washed and slippery.
- Twist each section. Twist the left section clockwise and the right section clockwise as well—both sections spin the same direction. Keep the twists tight but not so tight that they spring back. This creates the foundation tension.
- Wrap and secure. Take the twisted sections and wrap them around each other counterclockwise. The opposing directions create the rope effect that holds itself in place. Secure the end with a clear elastic and pull gently at the braid to add volume.
