How to Do Side Cornrows with Curls

Part hair dramatically to one side, braid three tight cornrows along the parting, then curl the remaining loose hair with a 1-inch barrel.

  1. Create the side part. Part hair dramatically to one side, about 2 inches from your ear. Use a rat-tail comb to make the line sharp and clean. The smaller section will hold your cornrows.
  2. Section for cornrows. Divide the smaller side into three horizontal sections, each about an inch wide. Clip away the larger section of hair you'll curl later.
  3. Braid the cornrows. Start each cornrow at the part line, braiding tightly against the scalp. Add hair as you go, keeping tension even. Secure each end with a small clear elastic.
  4. Curl the loose hair. Use a 1-inch curling iron on the remaining hair, curling away from your face. Let curls cool completely, then gently finger through for soft waves.
  5. Set the style. Mist lightly with flexible hold hairspray. The contrast between structured braids and soft curls is the point.
