How to do a side-swept ponytail

Create a deep side part, smooth hair toward the opposite side, and secure into a ponytail at your preferred height.

  1. Create your side part. Use a rat-tail comb to draw a clean line from your hairline to your crown, placing it about an inch from your natural part. The deeper the part, the more dramatic the sweep.
  2. Smooth the sweep. Brush all hair from the heavier side across your head using a boar bristle brush, following the direction of your part. Apply a small amount of styling cream to tame flyaways and create sleekness.
  3. Position and secure. Gather hair at your desired height—low for sophistication, mid-level for versatility, or high for drama. Secure with an elastic, ensuring the swept section maintains its smooth line across your head.
  4. Polish the finish. Wrap a small section of hair around the elastic to hide it, securing with a bobby pin underneath. Mist with light-hold hairspray to lock the style without stiffness.
