How to Create the Perfect Sock Bun

Roll a clean sock into a donut shape, thread your ponytail through it, and wrap hair around the base until covered.

  1. Prep your sock tool. Take a clean crew or tube sock and cut off the toe section. Roll it into a tight donut shape, tucking the cut end inside. The thicker the sock, the fuller your bun.
  2. Create a high ponytail. Pull hair into a tight ponytail at your desired height. Secure with an elastic that matches your hair color. The tighter the base, the sleeker your finished bun.
  3. Thread and position. Slide the sock donut down your ponytail to about two inches from the ends. Hold the ends of your hair and flip the sock inside out, rolling it toward your head while wrapping hair around it.
  4. Secure and smooth. Continue rolling until the sock reaches your elastic base. Tuck any loose pieces under the bun and pin if needed. Smooth flyaways with hairspray on a toothbrush.
