How to Do Space Buns

Part your hair down the middle, create two high ponytails, twist each section, and wrap into buns while leaving some texture loose.

Space buns work because they're simultaneously playful and architectural—just don't make them too precious or you'll look like you're headed to a music festival.

  1. Create the center part. Use a rat-tail comb to draw a clean line from your forehead to the nape of your neck. The sharper the part, the more intentional the look appears.
  2. Section into high ponytails. Gather each side into a ponytail positioned above your ears, not at the crown. This placement prevents the kindergarten effect and keeps things modern.
  3. Twist and wrap. Twist each ponytail loosely, then wrap around the base to form buns. Secure with bobby pins that match your hair color, leaving some pieces deliberately messy for texture.
  4. Adjust the tension. Pull gently at sections of each bun to create volume and imperfection. Perfect space buns look costume-y; slightly undone ones look intentional.
