How to Do Stitch Braids
Stitch braids use a rat-tail comb to create clean, precise parts that look like stitching, then braid each section tightly from root to tip.
- Prep your hair. Start with freshly washed, detangled hair that's about 80% dry. Apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner and edge control to your roots. The slight dampness helps with grip and smoothness.
- Create the stitch part. Use the pointed end of a rat-tail comb to draw a zigzag line from your front hairline to the nape. The zigzag should be small and tight - think actual stitching thread. This creates the signature look.
- Section and secure. Part off one side of the zigzag and clip away the rest. Work with sections about 1-2 inches wide depending on your hair thickness. Clean sections make clean braids.
- Start the braid. Begin braiding right at the root, pulling each cross-over tight and close to the scalp. Keep consistent tension - loose spots will show. Braid all the way to the ends and secure with a small elastic.
- Repeat and finish. Continue the zigzag part down your head, braiding each new section. Seal the ends with a tiny bit of edge control to prevent fraying.
