How to Do a Topknot Bun
A topknot bun is a high bun positioned at the crown of your head, created by gathering hair into a high ponytail and twisting it into a bun.
The topknot is the equivalent of good bones in fashion — it works because the structure is right, not because you spent an hour on it.
- Start with the right texture. Work with day-old hair or add texture spray to clean hair. The slight grip prevents slippage and makes the bun hold better. Brush everything back toward the crown of your head.
- Create a high ponytail. Gather hair at the highest point of your crown, where the top of your head starts to curve. Secure with a clear elastic, pulling tight enough to eliminate bumps but not so tight it hurts.
- Twist and wrap. Twist the ponytail length clockwise until it begins to coil on itself. Wrap this twisted rope around the base of the ponytail, tucking the end under the bun and securing with bobby pins.
- Lock it down. Insert bobby pins in an X pattern around the base, pushing them toward your scalp. Use pins that match your hair color and spray with hairspray for hold.
