How to Do a Twist-Out for Defined Curls
Apply leave-in conditioner to damp hair, twist small sections away from your face, sleep in the twists, then gently separate them in the morning.
- Start with damp, not wet hair. Hair should be 70% dry after washing. Too wet and it won't dry properly overnight. Too dry and the curls won't form.
- Apply leave-in conditioner and curl cream. Work product through each section before twisting. The key is even distribution—uneven product means uneven curls.
- Twist small sections away from your face. Take 1-2 inch sections and twist tightly from root to tip. Smaller sections create tighter curls, larger sections give looser waves.
- Sleep with a silk scarf or pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases create friction that causes frizz. Silk keeps the twists smooth and intact while you sleep.
- Untwist gently and separate. Don't rush this part. Untwist each section carefully, then gently separate the curl with your fingers for volume.
