How to Refresh Hair After a Long Flight

Mist with water, scrunch with a lightweight oil, and flip your head upside down to shake out the airplane flatness.

  1. Assess the damage. Look at what you're working with — greasy roots, flat mid-lengths, or dry ends. Different problems need different fixes, so don't just spray and pray.
  2. Mist strategically. Spray water on mid-lengths and ends only, avoiding the roots which are probably already oily. Your hair needs moisture after recycled airplane air, not more grease at the scalp.
  3. Add lightweight oil. Work a tiny amount of hair oil through damp lengths while scrunching gently. This reactivates your natural texture and adds back the moisture that cabin pressure stripped away.
  4. Flip and shake. Turn your head upside down and shake your hair out with your fingers. This breaks up any flat spots and gives you back some volume without needing heat tools.
  5. Spot-fix the roots. If roots are greasy, use dry shampoo only where you need it. If they're flat but not oily, lift sections and blast cool air from a blow dryer at the roots for 30 seconds.
