How to Style Hair with a Scarf

Fold the scarf into a band, secure it at the nape, and adjust the positioning to complement your face shape and outfit.

Hair scarves are the fastest way to look put-together when you haven't washed your hair in three days.

  1. Choose your scarf. Pick a silk or cotton square that coordinates with your look. Silk moves beautifully and won't snag hair, while cotton gives more grip for secure styling.
  2. Create the base. Fold the scarf diagonally into a triangle, then fold the long edge over twice to create a band about 3 inches wide. This gives you the right proportion for most head sizes.
  3. Position and secure. Place the band at your hairline or behind your ears, depending on your preferred look. Cross the ends at the nape of your neck and tie them in a knot or bow underneath your hair.
  4. Adjust and finish. Tuck the loose ends under the band or let them peek out intentionally. Pull out a few face-framing pieces if you want a softer effect.
