Round Brush Blowout for Volume
Lift sections at the root with a round brush while directing heat downward, then cool the hair in the lifted position to lock in volume.
Volume that requires an engineering degree to maintain isn't volume worth having—master the lift and cool, everything else is just marketing.
- Prep with damp hair. Start with hair that's 80% dry—not soaking, not completely dry. Apply a volumizing mousse or spray to your roots while hair is still slightly damp. The moisture helps the brush grip without creating frizz.
- Section and lift. Take horizontal sections about two inches wide. Place your round brush under the section at the roots and lift straight up—not back toward your head. This creates the lift that becomes volume.
- Heat and tension. With the brush lifted, direct your blow dryer heat down the hair shaft from roots to ends. Keep tension on the brush but don't yank. The combination of heat and lifted positioning trains your hair upward.
- Cool to set. Before releasing each section, hit it with cool air from your dryer or let it cool naturally for 10 seconds while still wrapped around the brush. This locks in the shape and volume you just created.
