How to Use a Hair Steamer Cap

Apply your treatment product, put on the steamer cap, and let steam open your hair cuticles for deeper penetration.

  1. Prep your hair. Start with damp, towel-dried hair. Apply your deep conditioner, hair mask, or oil treatment from mid-length to ends, avoiding the roots. The steamer cap works by opening your hair cuticles, so you want product there to penetrate.
  2. Set up the steamer cap. Fill the cap's water compartment according to instructions—usually just a few ounces. Plug it in and let it heat for the recommended time, typically 2-3 minutes. Most caps have an indicator light that shows when they're ready.
  3. Apply and time it. Put the cap on your head, making sure all your hair is inside and the cap sits snugly. Set a timer for 15-30 minutes depending on your hair's condition and the product instructions. The steam should feel warm but never burning.
  4. Rinse and style. Remove the cap and let your hair cool for a minute before rinsing thoroughly. The steam will have opened your cuticles, so finish with cool water to seal them back down and lock in the treatment.
