How to Use a Steam Hair Dryer

Hold the steam dryer 6 inches from damp hair, use the steam burst on stubborn sections, and keep it moving to avoid heat damage.

  1. Prep your hair. Start with towel-dried hair that's about 70% dry. Apply heat protectant from mid-length to ends. Steam works best on slightly damp hair, not soaking wet.
  2. Section and position. Divide hair into 2-inch sections using clips. Hold the dryer 6 inches away from your head at a 45-degree angle. This distance prevents overheating while maximizing steam penetration.
  3. Use the steam strategically. Press the steam button only on stubborn areas or coarse sections that need extra moisture. Keep the dryer moving constantly to distribute heat evenly and prevent hot spots.
  4. Finish with cool air. Switch to the cool setting for the last 30 seconds on each section. This seals the hair cuticle and locks in the moisture from the steam.
