How to Use a Tapered Curling Wand

Hold the wider end at your roots, wrap hair away from your face, and let the taper create naturally graduated curls.

  1. Prep your hair. Start with completely dry hair and apply heat protectant from mid-length to ends. The wand works best on day-old hair with some texture, so skip washing if your hair is clean.
  2. Section strategically. Part your hair into 1-2 inch horizontal sections, starting from the bottom layer. Smaller sections create tighter curls, larger sections give loose waves.
  3. Position the wand correctly. Hold the wider barrel end near your roots and the narrow tip pointing down toward your ends. This lets gravity work with the taper for natural-looking curls that are fuller at the top.
  4. Wrap away from your face. Wind hair around the barrel starting at the wide end, leaving the last inch of your hair out for a modern finish. Hold for 8-12 seconds depending on your hair thickness.
  5. Release and cool. Let the curl fall into your palm and hold it there for a few seconds while it cools. This sets the shape and makes curls last longer.
