How to Deep Condition Hair at Home

Apply a concentrated treatment to damp hair, leave for 15-30 minutes under heat, then rinse thoroughly.

Most people deep condition wrong by focusing on their scalp instead of their ends, then wonder why their roots look greasy and their lengths stay dry.

  1. Start with clean, damp hair. Shampoo first to remove buildup that blocks treatment absorption. Gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel. Hair should be damp, not dripping.
  2. Apply treatment from mid-length to ends. Skip the scalp and focus on the oldest, most damaged parts of your hair. Use more product than you think you need. Comb through with a wide-tooth comb for even distribution.
  3. Add heat and time. Cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap, then apply heat with a blow dryer for 5-10 minutes or sit under a hooded dryer. Let it penetrate for 15-30 minutes total.
  4. Rinse thoroughly. Use cool water to seal the hair cuticle and lock in moisture. Rinse until water runs clear to prevent residue buildup.
