How to Deep Condition Hair at Home
Apply deep conditioner to damp hair from mid-length to ends, leave for 10-20 minutes, then rinse with cool water.
- Start with clean, damp hair. Shampoo first to remove buildup that blocks conditioning ingredients. Gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt. Your hair should be damp, not dripping.
- Section and apply conditioner. Divide hair into 4-6 sections depending on thickness. Apply deep conditioner from mid-length to ends, avoiding roots unless your scalp is very dry. Use more product than you think you need.
- Distribute evenly. Work through each section with a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. Focus on the ends where damage accumulates. The goal is even coverage without tugging.
- Create heat and wait. Clip hair up and cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap. The trapped heat opens cuticles for better penetration. Wait 10 minutes for fine hair, 20 for thick or damaged hair.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water. Cool water seals the cuticle and locks in moisture. Rinse until water runs clear to prevent weighing hair down. Follow with a light leave-in if needed.
