How to Deep Condition Hair at Home

Apply deep conditioner to damp hair from mid-length to ends, leave for 10-20 minutes, then rinse with cool water.

  1. Start with clean, damp hair. Shampoo first to remove buildup that blocks conditioning ingredients. Gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt. Your hair should be damp, not dripping.
  2. Section and apply conditioner. Divide hair into 4-6 sections depending on thickness. Apply deep conditioner from mid-length to ends, avoiding roots unless your scalp is very dry. Use more product than you think you need.
  3. Distribute evenly. Work through each section with a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. Focus on the ends where damage accumulates. The goal is even coverage without tugging.
  4. Create heat and wait. Clip hair up and cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap. The trapped heat opens cuticles for better penetration. Wait 10 minutes for fine hair, 20 for thick or damaged hair.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. Cool water seals the cuticle and locks in moisture. Rinse until water runs clear to prevent weighing hair down. Follow with a light leave-in if needed.
