Hot Oil Hair Treatment at Home

Heat your chosen oil to warm (not hot), apply from mid-length to ends, wrap in a towel, wait 20-30 minutes, then shampoo twice.

Most people use too much oil and wonder why their hair looks unwashed for days—less is always more.

  1. Choose your oil. Coconut oil works for most hair types, argan for fine hair, or olive oil for thick, coarse hair. Start with 2-3 tablespoons for shoulder-length hair.
  2. Heat the oil. Warm oil in a small bowl using hot water or microwave for 10-15 seconds. Test on your wrist—it should feel warm, not hot enough to burn.
  3. Apply strategically. Work oil through damp hair from mid-length to ends, avoiding your scalp unless it's extremely dry. Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute evenly.
  4. Create heat. Wrap hair in plastic wrap or a shower cap, then cover with a warm towel. The heat helps oil penetrate the hair shaft more effectively.
  5. Time and rinse. Leave for 20-30 minutes, then shampoo twice with lukewarm water. Follow with your usual conditioner if needed.
