Hot Oil Hair Treatment at Home
Heat your chosen oil to warm (not hot), apply from mid-length to ends, wrap in a towel, wait 20-30 minutes, then shampoo twice.
Most people use too much oil and wonder why their hair looks unwashed for days—less is always more.
- Choose your oil. Coconut oil works for most hair types, argan for fine hair, or olive oil for thick, coarse hair. Start with 2-3 tablespoons for shoulder-length hair.
- Heat the oil. Warm oil in a small bowl using hot water or microwave for 10-15 seconds. Test on your wrist—it should feel warm, not hot enough to burn.
- Apply strategically. Work oil through damp hair from mid-length to ends, avoiding your scalp unless it's extremely dry. Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute evenly.
- Create heat. Wrap hair in plastic wrap or a shower cap, then cover with a warm towel. The heat helps oil penetrate the hair shaft more effectively.
- Time and rinse. Leave for 20-30 minutes, then shampoo twice with lukewarm water. Follow with your usual conditioner if needed.
