How to Use Hair Oil Without Looking Like You Dunked Your Head in a Deep Fryer

Apply oil to damp hair from mid-length to ends, use less than you think you need, and focus on the most damaged areas.

Hair oil is not a miracle cure. It is a tool for managing existing hair, not transforming it into something it is not.

  1. Start with damp hair. Work oil into hair that's about 80% dry after washing. Wet hair dilutes the oil and makes distribution easier. Soaking wet hair will just slide the oil right off.
  2. Use the right amount. Start with 2-3 drops for shoulder-length hair, 4-5 for longer. You can always add more but you cannot take it back. Fine hair needs even less.
  3. Apply strategically. Focus on mid-lengths to ends where hair is oldest and most damaged. Avoid roots unless your scalp is genuinely dry. Work through with fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
  4. Choose your timing. Use as a pre-wash treatment for deep conditioning, or as a finishing step on styled hair for shine. Overnight treatments work but protect your pillowcase.
