How to Care for 2A Wavy Hair

2A hair needs gentle cleansing, lightweight moisture, and scrunching to enhance natural waves without weighing them down.

2A hair is the Goldilocks of textures—not quite straight, not quite curly, and annoyingly particular about everything you put on it.

  1. Wash less, condition more. Shampoo only your scalp 2-3 times per week with a sulfate-free formula. Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends, detangle with a wide-tooth comb, then rinse most but not all of it out. Your waves need slip, not squeaky clean hair.
  2. Apply products to soaking wet hair. Work a lightweight leave-in conditioner through damp strands, followed by a small amount of mousse or curl cream. The key is applying to dripping wet hair so products distribute evenly without creating clumps.
  3. Scrunch, don't brush. Gently scrunch hair upward with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt to remove excess water while encouraging wave formation. Never brush or comb dry wavy hair unless you want frizz and broken wave patterns.
  4. Air dry or diffuse on low. Let hair air dry completely or use a diffuser on low heat and speed, scrunching sections as you go. Once fully dry, scrunch out any product crunch for soft, defined waves.
