How to Care for 3A Curly Hair

3A curls need moisture without weight, gentle handling, and products that define without crunch.

3A hair is the sweet spot where you can actually get away with less effort if you work with your texture instead of against it.

  1. Wash less, condition more. Shampoo only when your scalp feels oily, usually twice a week maximum. Focus shampoo on your scalp, not the lengths. Use a moisturizing conditioner every wash day, working it through mid-lengths to ends with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
  2. Apply products to soaking wet hair. Your hair should be dripping wet when you apply leave-in conditioner and curl cream. This dilutes the products and helps them distribute evenly without weighing down your curls. Start with less product than you think you need.
  3. Scrunch, don't rake. Cup sections of hair in your palm and gently squeeze upward toward your scalp. This encourages your natural curl pattern without disrupting it. Never brush or comb dry curls unless you want frizz.
  4. Dry with intention. Gently press out excess water with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt. Air dry when possible, or use a diffuser on low heat and low speed. Flip your head upside down while diffusing to add volume at the roots.
