How to Care for 3C Curly Hair
3C hair needs consistent moisture, gentle handling, and products that define curls without weighing them down.
3C hair is not broken straight hair that needs fixing—it's a complete system that works beautifully when you stop fighting its nature.
- Wash with intention. Use a sulfate-free shampoo once or twice weekly maximum. Focus on your scalp, not your lengths. Your curl pattern holds onto moisture poorly, so overwashing strips essential oils faster than straight hair.
- Condition like your life depends on it. Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends every wash day. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to distribute evenly through wet hair. Leave on for at least three minutes before rinsing with cool water.
- Style on soaking wet hair. Apply leave-in conditioner and curl cream while your hair drips water. Section your hair and scrunch products upward to encourage curl formation. Never brush or comb dry 3C hair unless you want a lion's mane.
- Dry with care. Scrunch excess water with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt. Air dry when possible, or use a diffuser on low heat with minimal airflow. Keep your hands out of your hair while it dries.
- Sleep smart. Use a silk or satin pillowcase, or wrap your hair in a silk scarf. Consider the pineapple method: loosely gather curls at the very top of your head with a scrunchie. This prevents crushing your curl pattern overnight.
