How to Care for 4A Coily Hair

4A hair needs moisture-first routines with gentle cleansing, deep conditioning, and protective styling to maintain curl definition and prevent breakage.

4A hair isn't difficult, it's just honest—it shows you exactly how you've been treating it. Respect the moisture requirements and it will reward you with definition that lasts.

  1. Cleanse weekly with sulfate-free shampoo. Wash once a week or every 10 days to avoid stripping natural oils. Focus shampoo on your scalp, not the length of your hair. Use lukewarm water to prevent dryness.
  2. Deep condition religiously. Apply a protein-free deep conditioner from mid-length to ends weekly. Cover with a plastic cap and sit under heat for 20-30 minutes. This is non-negotiable for 4A hair.
  3. Detangle on wet, conditioned hair only. Never detangle dry 4A hair. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers on soaking wet hair loaded with conditioner, working from ends to roots in small sections.
  4. Apply leave-in conditioner to damp hair. Use the praying hands method to smooth leave-in conditioner through damp hair. This seals in moisture and creates a barrier against environmental damage.
  5. Seal with oil or cream. Follow leave-in with a small amount of natural oil or styling cream to lock in moisture. Focus on the ends, which are the oldest and most fragile part of your hair.
  6. Sleep in satin or silk. Use a satin pillowcase or silk scarf to reduce friction while sleeping. Cotton pillowcases absorb moisture and cause tangles that lead to breakage.
