How to Care for 4B Coily Hair

4B hair thrives on moisture, gentle handling, and protective styling with minimal manipulation.

Stop treating your hair like it's broken and start working with its natural pattern—4B hair is actually incredibly strong when you stop fighting it.

  1. Cleanse weekly with sulfate-free shampoo. Wash once a week maximum using a sulfate-free shampoo to avoid stripping natural oils. Focus on your scalp, not the length of your hair. Over-washing leads to dryness and breakage in coily textures.
  2. Deep condition every wash day. Apply a moisturizing deep conditioner from mid-length to ends after every shampoo. Leave on for 15-30 minutes with heat or 45 minutes without. This step is non-negotiable for maintaining elasticity and preventing breakage.
  3. Apply leave-in conditioner on damp hair. While hair is still damp, distribute leave-in conditioner evenly using the praying hands method. This creates a moisture barrier and makes detangling safer. Never apply products to completely dry 4B hair.
  4. Seal with oil or butter. Lock in moisture by applying a small amount of natural oil or shea butter to the ends and any dry areas. This creates a protective barrier against environmental moisture loss. Focus on the oldest parts of your hair first.
  5. Sleep with satin or silk protection. Use a satin pillowcase, silk scarf, or satin bonnet every night without exception. Cotton absorbs moisture from your hair and creates friction that leads to tangles and breakage. This single habit prevents more damage than any product.
