How to Handle Fragile Hair Without Breaking It
Treat fragile hair like wet tissue paper — minimal manipulation, maximum moisture, and zero heat whenever possible.
- Wash less, condition more. Shampoo every third day maximum, focusing only on your scalp. Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends on every wash day, even when you skip shampoo. Your hair needs moisture more than it needs to be squeaky clean.
- Detangle when soaking wet. Only brush fragile hair when it's saturated with conditioner and water. Start from the ends and work up in small sections. Use a wide-tooth comb or wet brush designed for detangling.
- Air dry whenever humanly possible. Heat is fragile hair's biggest enemy. When you must use a blow dryer, use the lowest heat setting with a heat protectant and stop when hair is 80% dry. Let the rest happen naturally.
- Sleep on silk or satin. Cotton pillowcases create friction that snaps fragile strands. Switch to silk or satin, or use a silk scarf wrapped around your pillow. Your morning hair will thank you.
- Trim every 6-8 weeks religiously. Split ends travel up the hair shaft and make fragility worse. Regular micro-trims prevent small problems from becoming big ones. Think of it as maintenance, not loss.
