How to Balance Greasy Roots with Dry Ends
Treat your scalp and lengths as separate zones with targeted products and strategic washing.
- Zone your washing routine. Apply clarifying shampoo only to your scalp and roots, massaging gently without dragging product down the lengths. Let the suds rinse through your ends naturally. This removes oil buildup without stripping your already-dry mid-lengths and ends.
- Condition strategically. Apply conditioner from your ears down, avoiding the top few inches of your hair entirely. Focus the heaviest concentration on your ends. Leave for 2-3 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
- Dry shampoo preventatively. Apply dry shampoo to clean, dry roots before bed rather than waiting until your hair looks greasy. This absorbs oil as it forms overnight, extending time between washes and preventing the cycle of overwashing.
- Weekly deep treatment for ends. Once a week, apply a hair mask or oil treatment exclusively to your mid-lengths and ends while leaving roots untouched. Focus on the last 4-6 inches of your hair where damage is most concentrated.
