How to Maintain Locs at Home
Locs need regular washing, palm rolling or twisting, and proper drying to stay healthy and formed.
- Wash weekly with residue-free shampoo. Use clarifying shampoo to prevent buildup that can weaken locs. Focus on your scalp, not the length. Buildup is loc enemy number one.
- Palm roll or twist new growth. Work clockwise or counterclockwise consistently at the roots where new hair grows. Do this on damp hair after washing. Pick one direction and stick to it.
- Dry completely before styling. Squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel, then air dry or use low heat. Damp locs breed mildew and smell. Never sleep on wet locs.
- Oil sparingly. Light oils like jojoba on the scalp only, never the length. Too much oil attracts dirt and creates buildup. Your locs should feel clean, not slick.
