How to Care for Relaxer-Damaged Hair During Transition
Focus on moisture, gentle handling, and protective styling while your natural texture grows out.
- Assess the damage. Look for breakage patterns, thin spots, and areas where hair feels brittle or stretchy when wet. This tells you where to focus extra care and which sections need the most protection.
- Deep condition weekly. Use protein treatments every 2-3 weeks if hair feels mushy, moisture treatments if it feels brittle. Your hair has two different textures now and needs consistent hydration to prevent breakage at the line where they meet.
- Detangle when soaking wet. Apply leave-in conditioner, then work through sections with a wide-tooth comb from ends to roots. Never detangle dry transitioning hair—the texture difference creates natural breaking points.
- Protect the vulnerable spots. The line where relaxed hair meets natural growth is your weakest point. Sleep on silk, avoid tight elastics, and style gently around this area to prevent snapping.
- Style for both textures. Braid-outs, twist-outs, and roller sets work with mixed textures better than straight styles. Focus on techniques that blend the different curl patterns rather than fighting them.
