How to Care for Thick Hair to Reduce Bulk
Strategic layering, proper product distribution, and controlled drying techniques create movement while reducing visual weight.
- Cut with intention. Ask for long layers and internal thinning, not blunt cuts that emphasize bulk. The goal is removing weight without sacrificing length or creating frizz.
- Distribute product strategically. Apply lightweight oils or serums to damp hair, focusing on mid-lengths and ends where bulk accumulates. Skip the roots entirely to avoid weighing down your foundation.
- Section while drying. Blow dry in horizontal sections using a paddle brush, directing airflow down the hair shaft. This creates sleeker results with less puff than all-over drying.
- Cool and set. Finish with cool air to seal the cuticle and reduce volume. Run a boar bristle brush through once more to distribute natural oils and create polish.
