How to Care for Thick Hair to Reduce Bulk

Strategic layering, proper product distribution, and controlled drying techniques create movement while reducing visual weight.

  1. Cut with intention. Ask for long layers and internal thinning, not blunt cuts that emphasize bulk. The goal is removing weight without sacrificing length or creating frizz.
  2. Distribute product strategically. Apply lightweight oils or serums to damp hair, focusing on mid-lengths and ends where bulk accumulates. Skip the roots entirely to avoid weighing down your foundation.
  3. Section while drying. Blow dry in horizontal sections using a paddle brush, directing airflow down the hair shaft. This creates sleeker results with less puff than all-over drying.
  4. Cool and set. Finish with cool air to seal the cuticle and reduce volume. Run a boar bristle brush through once more to distribute natural oils and create polish.
