How to Do Makeup on a Budget
Focus on versatile basics that multitask and skip single-use products.
The beauty industry profits from convincing you that you need seventeen steps when three thoughtful ones will do.
- Start with multitasking basics. Buy a tinted moisturizer with SPF, cream blush that works on lips, and brown mascara that doubles as brow gel. These three products create a complete look and each serves multiple purposes.
- Map your actual routine. Track what you actually use daily for two weeks before buying anything. Most people use five products maximum on a regular basis, so invest in those and skip the rest.
- Shop your current collection first. Use lipstick as cream blush, eyeshadow as highlighter, and bronzer as eyeshadow. Most products are interchangeable if you understand undertones and finishes.
- Buy one quality brush. A dense, flat-top brush applies powder, blush, bronzer, and highlighter equally well. Clean it between uses with a spray bottle and gentle soap.
- Master the no-buy rule. For every new product, finish one you own first. This prevents accumulation and forces you to actually use what you have before adding more.
