How to Apply Concealer Without Looking Cakey
Apply concealer in thin layers after foundation, blend outward from the center of blemishes, and set only where you need coverage to last.
Most people use three times too much concealer and wonder why their makeup looks obvious.
- Prep your base. Apply foundation first, then concealer. Foundation handles overall coverage while concealer targets specific issues. This prevents using too much product and creates a more natural finish.
- Choose your shade. For blemishes, match your skin tone exactly. For under-eyes, go one shade lighter than your foundation. Two different concealers often work better than trying to make one do everything.
- Apply strategically. Dot concealer directly onto the center of blemishes or dark circles. Use less than you think you need. You can always build coverage, but removing excess is harder.
- Blend outward. Pat from the center outward using your ring finger or a damp beauty sponge. Never rub or drag the product. The goal is to blur edges while keeping maximum coverage at the center.
- Set selectively. Dust setting powder only where you applied concealer, not your entire face. Use a small brush to avoid disturbing surrounding makeup. This locks coverage without adding unnecessary texture.
