How to Create a Long-Wear Look Without the Weight

Layer thin formulas strategically and set selectively to build staying power without cake.

  1. Start with skinlike prep. Use a lightweight primer only where you actually need it—T-zone for oil control, under-eyes for smoothing. Skip the full-face primer unless your makeup slides off without it. Thin layers stick better than thick ones.
  2. Build base in whisper layers. Apply foundation with a damp beauty sponge, pressing and bouncing rather than rubbing. Do one thin layer, assess, then add only where needed. Your skin should still look like skin.
  3. Spot-correct strategically. Concealer goes only on actual imperfections, not entire under-eye areas unless you have serious darkness. Use a shade that matches your skin exactly—lighter concealer creates more work later.
  4. Set selectively, not everywhere. Powder only where you get oily or where makeup tends to move. Use a fluffy brush and the lightest possible dusting. Your cheeks and forehead probably don't need powder.
  5. Lock in color placement. Apply cream blush and cream bronzer before powder for better adherence. Set these with a corresponding powder shade if you're oily, or leave them alone if you're not.
