How to Do Makeup for Oily T-Zone

Prime your T-zone with a mattifying primer, use powder foundation or set liquid foundation immediately, and keep blotting papers handy for touch-ups.

  1. Start with a mattifying primer. Apply a silicone-based mattifying primer only to your T-zone—forehead, nose, and chin. This creates a barrier that absorbs oil and helps makeup grip better. Skip oil-controlling primers on dry areas of your face.
  2. Choose the right foundation approach. Either use a powder foundation directly on your T-zone, or apply liquid foundation and immediately set it with translucent powder. Don't let liquid foundation sit without powder—oil will break through within an hour.
  3. Layer your powder strategically. Press—don't brush—setting powder into your T-zone using a damp beauty sponge. This packs the powder down and creates a stronger oil barrier than sweeping with a fluffy brush.
  4. Adjust your application technique. Apply cream blush and highlighter to your cheeks and temples only, avoiding the oily center of your face. Use powder formulas for any color that needs to go on your T-zone.
