How to Do Makeup That Lasts Through Tears
Use waterproof formulas, set everything with powder, and build in thin layers that bond to skin rather than sitting on top.
- Prime with intention. Apply eyeshadow primer to lids and a mattifying primer to your face. These create a grippy base that holds onto makeup even when wet. Skip oil-based primers—they'll slide right off.
- Build waterproof base layers. Use waterproof concealer under your eyes and waterproof foundation if you have it. Apply in thin layers, pressing into skin with a damp beauty sponge rather than rubbing. Set each layer with translucent powder.
- Lock in your eye makeup. Apply waterproof mascara only to the tips of your lashes—coating the entire lash makes it heavy and prone to smudging. Use a setting spray on your eyeshadow brush before applying shadow for extra staying power.
- Strategic powder placement. Press powder under your eyes, around your nose, and anywhere tears might travel. Use a fluffy brush to really press it in—don't sweep, press. This creates a moisture barrier.
- Final setting layer. Hold setting spray 8 inches from your face and mist evenly. Let it dry completely before any emotional moments. The spray creates a protective film over your makeup.
