Matching Eyeshadow to Your Skin Undertones
Understanding the difference between warm and cool tones is the primary factor in selecting wearable eyeshadow. Skin possesses a subtle secondary hue that informs which colors look harmonious rather than clashing against your complexion. This is not about the darkness of your skin but the temperature of its undertones.
Selecting shadows that mirror your natural temperature creates a cohesive look. Neutral colors offer a bridge when the distinction between warm and cool is ambiguous.
- Observe your wrist veins. Examine the veins on the inside of your wrist under natural daylight. If they appear blue or purple, your skin leans toward cool tones. If they appear green, your skin leans toward warm tones.
- Test with fabric swatches. Hold a piece of gold fabric and a piece of silver fabric near your face. If the gold makes your skin appear vibrant, you are likely warm-toned. If the silver makes your complexion appear clearer and brighter, you are likely cool-toned.
- Select warm palette shadows. For warm skin, prioritize shadows with yellow or orange bases. Opt for copper, gold, bronze, and warm terracotta shades. These colors will reflect the natural glow inherent in your complexion.
- Select cool palette shadows. For cool skin, choose shadows with blue, pink, or purple bases. Look for taupe, silver, slate grey, and jewel tones like navy or emerald. These colors will appear crisp against your skin.
A cohesive color story begins with identifying your underlying hue.
