How to Apply Eyeliner Without Looking Like You Tried Too Hard

Start with pencil close to the lash line, work in small sections, and keep your eyes slightly open while drawing.

Perfect eyeliner is a myth that sells products. Good eyeliner looks like you have better lashes, not like you spent twenty minutes with a ruler.

  1. Pick your weapon. Start with pencil eyeliner—it's forgiving and blendable. Brown or dark gray looks more natural than black for beginners. Save liquid liner for when you can draw a straight line without thinking about it.
  2. Position yourself properly. Sit at a table with a mirror propped up so you're looking slightly down. Rest your elbow on the surface for stability. This angle lets you see your lash line clearly without stretching your lid.
  3. Map your starting point. Look straight ahead in the mirror and mark where your iris ends—this is where your liner should be thickest. Start here, not at the inner corner where mistakes show most.
  4. Draw in sections. Keep your eye slightly open and draw small dashes close to your lash line, connecting them as you go. Work from the center outward, then fill in toward the inner corner. The goal is to create the illusion of fuller lashes, not a dramatic line.
  5. Clean up and balance. Use a small flat brush or cotton swab to soften harsh edges and remove any wobbles. Check both eyes from a normal viewing distance—perfection up close means overdone from afar.
