How to Apply Eyeshadow Without Looking Like You Tried Too Hard

Start with one neutral shade close to your skin tone, blend it across the lid with a fluffy brush, then add depth with a slightly darker shade in the crease.

  1. Prime the canvas. Pat a tiny amount of eyeshadow primer or concealer across your eyelid from lash line to brow bone. This prevents creasing and makes colors show up true to pan.
  2. Pick your base shade. Choose a matte shade one or two tones deeper than your skin. Sweep it across the entire moveable lid with a flat shader brush. This creates dimension without drama.
  3. Define the crease. Take a fluffy blending brush and a shade slightly darker than your base. Tap off excess powder, then sweep back and forth in your crease with windshield wiper motions until the line disappears.
  4. Clean up the edges. Use a clean blending brush to soften any harsh lines. The goal is a gradient that looks like shadow, not stripes.
