Mascara Application Without Clumping
Clumping occurs when too much formula is deposited on the lash line, causing individual hairs to adhere to one another. The objective of clean mascara application is to coat every lash from root to tip while maintaining separation. This requires attention to the amount of product on the wand and the pressure applied during the stroke.
Mastering this technique removes the need for cleanup and prevents the heavy, weighed-down appearance associated with over-application. Follow the steps below to ensure even distribution and longevity.
- Prepare the wand. Withdraw the mascara wand from the tube with a gentle, twisting motion. Avoid pumping the wand in and out of the tube, as this forces air inside and accelerates formula degradation. Wipe any excess product from the tip and the sides of the bristles onto the rim of the tube.
- Apply to the roots. Place the wand at the base of your upper lashes. Use a slight side-to-side wiggling motion to deposit the majority of the pigment at the root. This technique creates a foundation of volume without overloading the tips of the lashes.
- Pull through to the tips. Slowly draw the wand through the lashes in an upward, sweeping motion. Maintain a light, consistent pressure to ensure the bristles remain between the lashes rather than pushing them together. If you find the bristles catching, move more slowly to allow the comb effect to take place.
- Final separation. While the mascara is still damp, use a clean lash comb to separate any hairs that have adhered together. Brush through once or twice to remove excess formula. Do not wait for the mascara to dry, as this will make separation difficult.
The secret to clean application is removing the excess product before it touches your lash.
