The Proper Order for Using a Lash Curler

The placement of the lash curler within a makeup routine is a frequent point of contention, yet the mechanical constraints of the tool dictate a clear logic. Applying force to lashes coated in drying polymers increases the risk of brittleness and breakage.

Correct execution relies on curling clean, bare lashes before the application of any product. This approach provides the necessary structural support for the lash to hold a curl without the weight of mascara compromising the result.

  1. Ensure absolute cleanliness. Before beginning, verify that your lashes are free of residual oils, makeup, or moisturizers. Any debris on the hair shaft will cause slippage or uneven pressure. A clean lash is more receptive to structural changes.
  2. Position the base. Open the curler fully and place the base as close to the eyelid margin as possible without pinching the skin. Looking downward into a mirror helps secure the lashes within the frame. Ensure the entirety of the lash length is captured within the curvature.
  3. Apply steady pressure. Squeeze the handles firmly but gently for ten to fifteen seconds. Do not pull or tug on the lashes, as this causes physical damage to the root. Pulsing the grip can also help distribute the pressure more evenly along the curve.
  4. Seal with mascara. Once the curl is set, apply your mascara immediately. Start at the root and wiggle the wand through to the tip to lock the shape into place. The formula acts as a structural scaffold that keeps the lash in the position defined by the curler.
Curling after mascara application creates a focal point of tension that leads to breakage.
