Fixing Mascara Flaking

Mascara flaking is typically a result of product incompatibility with your eye area's natural chemistry. When the formula dries to a brittle state, the constant movement of blinking causes the pigment to fracture and deposit under the eye. By adjusting your preparation steps, you minimize the surface friction that leads to these unwanted transfers.

Achieving a stable lash finish requires a focus on surface cleanliness rather than simply applying more product. Follow these steps to ensure the adherence of your chosen mascara formula throughout the work day.

  1. Degrease the eyelid surface. Use a cotton pad soaked in a mild micellar water to remove any residual oils from your eyelids and lashes. Oils act as a solvent for most mascaras, causing the product to soften and crumble prematurely. Ensure the lash line is completely dry before moving to the next step.
  2. Apply a lash primer. A clear lash primer provides a base layer for your mascara to grip, effectively acting as an adhesive surface. Apply a thin, even coat from root to tip. This creates a flexible buffer between your natural lashes and the pigment of your mascara.
  3. Apply mascara with precision. Work the mascara wand into the base of the lashes using a horizontal zigzag motion, then pull through to the tips. Avoid over-layering, as excess weight increases the likelihood of flaking once the product dries. Limit yourself to two coats to keep the lash flexible.
  4. Seal with a top coat. If you are prone to smudging or flaking, apply a clear, polymer-based top coat over your dry mascara. This creates a film that locks the pigment in place without adding heavy bulk. Keep your eyes steady until the final layer is completely dry.
  5. Separate and clean. Use a clean spoolie to remove any excess product that may cause premature flaking. Run the brush through your lashes while the product is still tacky to catch heavy clumps. This ensures a clean, uniform look that stays intact.
A flexible lash is a stable lash; avoid over-layering products to prevent cracking.
