Concealer Sequence: Timing for Precise Coverage

The sequence of liquid base products remains a point of confusion for many. Whether you apply concealer before or after foundation is not a matter of dogma, but of objective utility. Placing concealer first can prevent excess product application, while applying it second allows you to see exactly where coverage is lacking.

This guide covers the two distinct methods for layering these products. You should choose your approach based on the intensity of the discoloration you intend to neutralize.

  1. Prep the canvas. Begin with clean, moisturized skin. Allow your moisturizer to absorb for at least five minutes before applying any makeup. If the skin is too damp, the subsequent products will slide rather than adhere.
  2. Apply foundation first. Dot foundation across the center of your face and blend outward. Use a buffing brush or a damp sponge to press the pigment into the skin. By covering the majority of the face first, you reduce the total amount of concealer required.
  3. Spot conceal the remaining area. Inspect your face for areas that still require coverage. Apply a minimal amount of concealer only to those specific points. Pat the product with your ring finger or a precision brush rather than rubbing, which would displace the foundation beneath.
  4. Set the area. Apply a fine, translucent setting powder over the concealed areas. Use a small, soft brush to press the powder gently into the concealer. This prevents creasing in areas of high movement, such as the under-eye or near the mouth.
Foundation provides the uniform base, while concealer provides the surgical intervention.
