How to Apply Concealer Without Looking Cakey

Apply concealer only where you need it, blend the edges, and set with powder.

Most people use three times more concealer than they actually need—precision beats coverage every time.

  1. Map your coverage zones. Look at your face in natural light and identify exactly where you need concealer. Most people need it under the eyes, around the nose, and on any blemishes. Don't apply it everywhere—your foundation should do most of the work.
  2. Choose the right shade. For under-eyes, go one shade lighter than your skin tone. For blemishes, match your exact skin tone. Test on your jawline, not your hand—your hand is always a different color than your face.
  3. Apply with intention. Dot concealer directly on the areas that need it. Under the eyes, make an upside-down triangle from the inner corner to the outer corner, down to the top of your cheek. For blemishes, apply just enough to cover, not more.
  4. Blend like you mean it. Use a damp beauty sponge or your ring finger to gently press and blend the edges. Never rub or drag—this lifts the product off your skin. The goal is seamless edges, not perfect coverage everywhere.
  5. Set strategically. Lightly dust translucent powder only over the concealer, using a small fluffy brush. This prevents creasing and keeps everything in place without adding texture to areas that don't need it.
