How to Apply Foundation with a Brush
Apply foundation with a dense, flat-top brush using stippling motions from the center of your face outward, building coverage in thin layers.
Everyone obsesses over the foundation when the brush technique matters more—master stippling and you can make drugstore foundation look expensive.
- Choose the right brush. Use a dense, synthetic flat-top brush with tightly packed bristles. Natural bristles absorb too much product and synthetic ones give better coverage. The brush should feel firm but not scratchy against your skin.
- Prep your base. Apply primer and let it set for two minutes before foundation. Clean, moisturized skin with a proper base prevents the brush from dragging or creating patches.
- Load the brush correctly. Squeeze foundation onto the back of your hand, not directly onto the brush. Dip just the tips of the bristles into the product and work it into the brush by pressing and swirling on your hand.
- Start at the center. Begin application at the center of your face where you need the most coverage. Use stippling motions rather than dragging the brush across your skin to avoid streaking.
- Build outward. Work from the center toward your hairline, jawline, and neck using the same stippling technique. Blend edges thoroughly where foundation meets bare skin to avoid harsh lines.
- Layer if needed. Build coverage gradually with thin layers rather than applying one thick coat. Let each layer set for thirty seconds before adding more product.
