How to Choose the Right Foundation Shade

Test foundation on your jawline in natural light, matching to your neck rather than your face.

Most people wear foundation two shades too dark because they test it wrong—your jawline never lies.

  1. Find your undertone. Look at your wrist veins in natural light. Blue or purple veins indicate cool undertones, green veins suggest warm undertones, and a mix means neutral. Your foundation should harmonize with this undertone, not fight it.
  2. Test on your jawline. Apply three shades along your jawline—one that looks right, one lighter, one darker. The correct shade disappears into your skin completely. Never test on your hand or inner wrist.
  3. Check in natural light. Step outside or near a window to see how the shades look in daylight. Store lighting lies, and you need to see how your foundation performs in real-world conditions.
  4. Match your neck. Your foundation should match your neck, not your face. Your face often has more color variation and redness, but your neck shows your true skin tone.
