How to Mix Foundations for a Custom Shade

Mix two foundations of similar formulas on the back of your hand, test on your jawline, and adjust ratios until you achieve a seamless match.

Most people think they need a perfect shade match when they actually need better application—but when you find your perfect mix, nothing else will do.

  1. Choose compatible formulas. Select foundations with the same base—water-based with water-based, oil-based with oil-based. Mixing different formulas creates separation and patchy application that no amount of blending can fix.
  2. Start with the lighter shade. Pump the lighter foundation onto the back of your hand first, then add tiny amounts of the darker shade. It's easier to deepen a light shade than to lighten a dark one.
  3. Mix in small increments. Add one small drop at a time and blend thoroughly with a clean finger or brush. Test each adjustment on your jawline in natural light before adding more.
  4. Test and adjust. Apply the mixed shade from jawline to neck to ensure it disappears completely. The right match vanishes into your skin without any visible line of demarcation.
