How to Mix Foundations for a Custom Shade
Mix two foundations of similar formulas on the back of your hand, test on your jawline, and adjust ratios until you achieve a seamless match.
Most people think they need a perfect shade match when they actually need better application—but when you find your perfect mix, nothing else will do.
- Choose compatible formulas. Select foundations with the same base—water-based with water-based, oil-based with oil-based. Mixing different formulas creates separation and patchy application that no amount of blending can fix.
- Start with the lighter shade. Pump the lighter foundation onto the back of your hand first, then add tiny amounts of the darker shade. It's easier to deepen a light shade than to lighten a dark one.
- Mix in small increments. Add one small drop at a time and blend thoroughly with a clean finger or brush. Test each adjustment on your jawline in natural light before adding more.
- Test and adjust. Apply the mixed shade from jawline to neck to ensure it disappears completely. The right match vanishes into your skin without any visible line of demarcation.
