How to Apply Foundation for a Natural Finish
Build thin layers with a damp beauty sponge, starting from the center of your face and blending outward.
- Prep your canvas. Start with clean, moisturized skin and let it set for five minutes. Skip primer unless your skin is particularly oily—it can create a barrier that makes foundation look cakey.
- Choose your weapon. A damp beauty sponge gives the most natural finish by pressing foundation into skin rather than dragging it across. Dampen it until it doubles in size, then squeeze out excess water.
- Apply in thin layers. Dot foundation only where you need it—center of face, under eyes, around nose. Use the sponge to press and bounce the product outward, never rubbing or swiping.
- Build strategically. Add a second thin layer only where needed—typically the center of your face where redness or darkness appears. Leave the perimeter of your face barely touched for the most natural gradient.
