How to Apply Lipstick That Won't Feather

Prime your lips, use a liner that matches your natural lip color, and apply lipstick in thin layers.

Most people line their lips like they're coloring in a children's book when they should be building a foundation that works even when half the lipstick wears off.

  1. Prep the canvas. Exfoliate dead skin with a lip scrub or soft toothbrush, then apply a thin layer of lip balm. Let it absorb for two minutes, then blot excess with a tissue.
  2. Create the barrier. Line your lips with a pencil that matches your natural lip color, not your lipstick. Trace slightly inside your natural lip line, then blend the liner inward with your finger.
  3. Apply in layers. Press lipstick onto lips using a brush or your finger rather than dragging it across. Build color gradually with two thin coats instead of one thick application.
  4. Set the color. Blot lips with a tissue, then dust a tiny amount of translucent powder over the tissue and press onto lips. This locks the pigment without dulling the finish.
