How to Apply Lipstick That Won't Feather
Prime your lips, use a liner that matches your natural lip color, and apply lipstick in thin layers.
Most people line their lips like they're coloring in a children's book when they should be building a foundation that works even when half the lipstick wears off.
- Prep the canvas. Exfoliate dead skin with a lip scrub or soft toothbrush, then apply a thin layer of lip balm. Let it absorb for two minutes, then blot excess with a tissue.
- Create the barrier. Line your lips with a pencil that matches your natural lip color, not your lipstick. Trace slightly inside your natural lip line, then blend the liner inward with your finger.
- Apply in layers. Press lipstick onto lips using a brush or your finger rather than dragging it across. Build color gradually with two thin coats instead of one thick application.
- Set the color. Blot lips with a tissue, then dust a tiny amount of translucent powder over the tissue and press onto lips. This locks the pigment without dulling the finish.
